Vinesh Phogat faced a major setback on Wednesday when she was disqualified from the Women’s Wrestling 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024 for being overweight. An Indian coach, speaking to PTI, confirmed the disqualification, stating, “She was found overweight by 100 gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified.” The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) also released a statement expressing regret: “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s Wrestling 50 kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50 kg this morning.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his support of Indian athletes, consoled Vinesh Phogat in a heartfelt message shared on X shortly after her exit was confirmed. “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions!
