(Source : ANI) August 5, 2024 – In a significant turn of events, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held crucial discussions with India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Monday. The discussions centered on the current volatile situation in Bangladesh and her future course of action, sources revealed.
The Indian Air Force has been put on high alert across all eastern sectors in response to the unfolding developments. Heightened security measures are in place for Sheikh Hasina, who was relocated to a secure location after arriving in India. Her arrival at the Hindon Air Base, near New Delhi, was facilitated by a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft on Monday evening.
Following her arrival, security outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi has been intensified. Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Dhaka came amidst escalating protests, prompting swift security responses from Indian authorities. Border security has also been reinforced, with a senior BSF officer confirming ongoing communication with the Border Guard Bangladesh. “As of now, the situation is normal at the border. Due to the curfew in Bangladesh, there are restrictions on traffic movement at Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) along the India-Bangladesh border,” the officer stated.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday evening about the political crisis in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s arrival in India.
In Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia appealed for calm amidst the unrest. As the BNP Chairperson, Zia urged citizens to maintain peace. Tariq Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP, echoed this call for calm, emphasizing the importance of stability during the crisis.
Adding to the tension, the anti-discrimination student movement announced plans to outline a national government at 8 pm local time. The movement’s leaders declared their intentions during a live broadcast on Channel 24, stating the announcement would take place at the Sark fountain in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka. Nahid Islam, the movement’s coordinator, urged students to prevent looting and maintain peaceful protests to achieve their goals.

The crisis escalated further on Monday as protestors stormed the Prime Minister’s official residence in Dhaka shortly after Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country with her sister. Prothom Alo, a leading Bangladesh newspaper, reported that agitators set fire to the Awami League’s Dhaka district office and Sheikh Hasina’s office at 3/A Dhanmondi in Dhaka. Protesters were seen chanting slogans and celebrating her resignation.
